How to calculate a tip and split the bill
A tip calculator does the restaurant math for you. Enter your bill, choose a tip percentage (15%, 18%, 20%, or a custom amount), and set how many people are paying. You instantly get the tip, the total with tip, and the exact amount each person owes. In the United States, 15% to 20% is standard for sit-down service, with 20% or more for service you were happy with.
The formula
total = bill + tip
per person = total ÷ number of people
Worked example
On an $80 bill with a 20% tip split between 4 people: the tip is 80 × 0.20 = $16, the total is 80 + 16 = $96, and each person pays 96 ÷ 4 = $24. Turn on round up to cover the bill and each share is rounded up to a clean amount, with the spare change going to a slightly bigger tip.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I tip at a restaurant?
In the US, 15% to 20% of the bill is standard for table service. Many people tip 20% by default and more for exceptional service. For counter service, takeout, or a quick coffee, a tip is appreciated but optional.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax total?
Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically more correct since tax is not part of the service, but plenty of people simply tip on the final total for convenience. This calculator applies your percentage to whatever bill amount you enter.
How do you split a bill with tip evenly?
Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide that total by the number of people. This calculator does it instantly, and the round-up option gives everyone a clean amount to hand over.
Do I need to tip on delivery or takeout?
For delivery, a tip of 10% to 15% (or a few dollars minimum) is customary because someone drove your order to you. For takeout you pick up yourself, tipping is optional, though rounding up is a kind gesture.
What is a good tip for great service?
20% to 25% is a generous, common way to recognize service you really appreciated. The quick-select buttons make 25% one tap away.
