How to create a strong password

A strong password is long and unpredictable. This generator builds one from the character types you choose using your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator, so the result is genuinely random. Everything happens on your device: no password is ever sent over the internet or stored anywhere.

What makes a password strong

The strength meter estimates entropy in bits, a measure of how hard the password is to guess. Above about 80 bits is considered very strong for everyday accounts.

Frequently asked questions

How does this password generator work?

It builds the character pool from the options you tick, then draws each character using your browser's secure random generator. It also guarantees at least one character from each type you selected.

Are the passwords stored or sent anywhere?

No. Generation happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted, logged, or saved, so the password only exists on your screen until you copy it.

How long should a password be?

At least 16 characters for important accounts. Longer is stronger, and length protects you more than swapping a few letters for symbols.

What does "avoid look-alikes" do?

It removes easily confused characters such as the letter l, the number 1, the capital O, and zero, which is helpful when you have to read or type a password by hand.

What is password entropy?

Entropy, measured in bits, estimates how unpredictable a password is. Each extra bit doubles the number of guesses needed, so higher entropy means a much harder password to crack.
