How to calculate running pace

Pace is how long it takes to cover one unit of distance, usually written as minutes per kilometre or minutes per mile. Divide your total time by the distance to get pace, or multiply pace by distance to predict a finish time. This calculator does both, and also shows your speed.

The formula

pace = total time ÷ distance
finish time = pace × distance
speed = distance ÷ time

Worked example

Run 5 km in 25 minutes and your pace is 25 ÷ 5 = 5:00 per km (about 8:03 per mile), a speed of 12 km/h. To break 4 hours in a marathon (42.2 km), you need to hold about 5:41 per km.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate running pace?

Divide your total running time by the distance covered. For example, 30 minutes over 6 km is a pace of 5:00 per km. Switch the tabs above to find pace from a run, or a finish time from a target pace.

What is a good running pace?

It varies hugely by fitness and goal. Many recreational runners sit between 5:30 and 7:00 per km for easy runs. The best pace is one you can sustain for your chosen distance.

How do I convert pace to speed?

Speed is distance divided by time. A pace of 5:00 per km equals 12 km/h. This calculator shows both pace and speed at once.

What pace do I need for a sub-4-hour marathon?

About 5:41 per kilometre, or roughly 9:09 per mile, held for the full 42.2 km. Use the "Find time" tab to test any pace and distance.

What is the difference between pace per km and per mile?

They measure the same effort over different distances. A mile is about 1.609 km, so your per-mile pace is a larger number than your per-km pace. The calculator reports both.
