Ideal weight calculator
A healthy target weight for your height, across the common formulas.
Ideal weight
How ideal weight is estimated
There is no single perfect weight for a given height, so this calculator shows several well-known formulas side by side. Each estimates a target weight from your height and sex, and together they give a sensible range rather than one rigid number. We also show the healthy weight range based on BMI for comparison.
The formulas
All four start from a base weight at 5 feet (152 cm) and add a fixed amount per inch above that:
- Devine: the classic clinical formula, still widely used for medication dosing.
- Robinson and Miller: later refinements that tend to read a little lower.
- Hamwi: a quick rule of thumb from the 1960s.
Use the spread between them, and the healthy BMI range, as a realistic target band rather than a single goal weight.
Frequently asked questions
What is ideal body weight?
It is an estimated healthy weight for your height, originally developed for medical use. It is a guide, not a strict target, and several formulas give slightly different numbers.
How is ideal weight calculated?
The common formulas use your height and sex, adding a set amount of weight for every inch above five feet. This tool shows the Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi results together.
Which ideal weight formula is best?
None is definitively best. The Devine formula is the most established, but reading them as a range is more useful than trusting any single value.
Is ideal weight the same as a healthy weight?
Not exactly. A healthy weight is a range, usually defined by a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. Ideal weight formulas give a single point inside or near that range.
Does ideal weight differ for men and women?
Yes. Each formula uses a different base weight for men and women, so results differ at the same height.
