GPA calculator
Add each course's grade and credit hours for your weighted GPA on a 4.0 scale.
Your GPA
How GPA is calculated
Grade Point Average weights each course by its credit hours, so a five-credit class counts more than a one-credit class. Each letter grade converts to grade points on a 4.0 scale, you multiply those points by the credits, add them up, and divide by the total credits.
The formula
Worked example
Three 3-credit courses graded A (4.0), A (4.0), and B (3.0) give (12 + 12 + 9) ÷ 9 = 3.67. On the 4.0 scale, A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0, and F is 0, with plus and minus grades in between.
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Convert each grade to points on the 4.0 scale, multiply by the course credits, add the results, and divide by the total number of credits. This calculator does it as you add courses.
What is the 4.0 GPA scale?
It maps letter grades to points: A is 4.0, B is 3.0, C is 2.0, D is 1.0, and F is 0. Plus and minus grades fall in between, for example A minus is 3.7 and B plus is 3.3.
What is a good GPA?
It varies by school and goal, but a 3.0 is generally solid, 3.5 and up is strong, and 3.7 or higher is often considered excellent. Many honors and scholarships use these thresholds.
How do credit hours affect GPA?
Credits weight each grade. A high grade in a heavy course lifts your GPA more than the same grade in a light one, and a low grade in a heavy course pulls it down more.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
An unweighted GPA caps every course at 4.0. A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder classes such as honors or AP, so it can exceed 4.0. This tool calculates a standard credit-weighted GPA.
